In a rarest of the rare kind, doctors have removed 550 stones from kidneys of a 75-year-old person from Dombivli in Maharashtra.

When the patient experienced stomach pain for the last few days, even in wildest of imaginations, would he have thought of kidney stone, leave along this large number? The senior citizen went to a private hospital after continued stomach pain. The doctors at the hospital were confused after detail examination which revealed 550 stones in his right kidney. All the stones were removed from the kidney after emergency surgery for around one and a half hours. The consultant Urologist at SRV Mamata Hospital, Dombivli, Dr Loksesh Sinha, operated upon the patient and removed the kidney stones with minimally invasive surgery. The patient experienced pain in the lower abdomen since last few days. But the doctors could not diagnose the reason for the pain. Hence the patient was subjected to ultrasound and CT Scan which revealed the kidney stones. The condition of the patient is reported to be stable and he has been discharged from the hospital. Doctors believe it could be a record to remove such a high number of stones from any one’s kidney.

In a similar incident, 410 stones were removed from the kidney of Bapusaheb Ramchandra Patil, 47, a resident of Kolhapur in 2013. The stones were removed by telescopic surgery. Both his kidneys were damaged, but the removal of stones brought him some relief, doctors said. Reasons for kidney stone
