ST. CHARLES, IL – A St. Charles North High School student who underwent a kidney transplant last month will be headed back to school at St. Charles North High School next week. Sam Shaw received his new kidney on Dec. 6. An article published in the Kane County Chronicle, regarding the fact that Shaw was seeking a new kidney, lead to a match, according to a Kane County Chronicle article.
A family contacted Lurie Children’s Hospital suggesting a "kidney exchange," since the father that family needed a kidney as well. As luck would have it, the adult daughter of the family that reached out to the hospital ended up being a blood-type match for Sam, according to the article. And Sam’s dad, Phil Shaw, was a match for the father.
"Phill and Sam have coped bravely with all of the inconveniences of surgery and with minimal use of pain relief," said Caroline Shaw, Sam’s mother, told the Kane County Chronicle an in e-mail. "I am so proud of them and love them to pieces. We are enormously grateful for the skills of the hospital staff. It is the kind words of encouragement and kind actions of support from our friends that have made such a difference to us as a family."
Shaw will return to school on Jan. 7 and is also able to resume normal activities, including playing his trombone. More via Kane County Chronicle
